Buckle Up Florida! New SeatBelt Law takes effect Today

Starting today, you don't have to be speeding to be pulled over. Drivers can now be pulled over for not having their seat belts belt on, as the new Seat belt law is now in effect.

Prior to June 30th, drivers could only be cited for not wearing a seat belt as a secondary offense. The new law, makes not wearing a seat belt a primary traffic offense.

Hillsborough County Deputies are vigorously enforcing OPERATION BELTS OR ELSE. Ticket drivers will be fined $30 per ticket. In addition, the Clerk of the Circuit Court adds extra $71 in fees for a total of $101 in fees.

The NHTSA estimates Florida can expect to save 124 lives each year with the new law and 1,700 people will be spared serious injuries. Estimates also show costs associated with accidents would be reduced by $408 million.

Now, I'm not one for having the government/law controlling one's actions, however, this crackdown can help save lives. Not everyone has the ability to think of consequences of their actions, and make unwise choices simply because its their free will. Therefore the law should step in to help protect those, who obviously can't or won't protect themselves. Driving, much like voting is a privilege, and having said that, people should abide by the rules. So to the defiant, its a choice of click it or ticket. Pick your poison.
