Digital Switch causes TV outage at Hillsborough County Jails

Add Hillsborough County jails to the list of those unprepared for the digital TV switch. TV for thousands of inmates went blank of Friday as a result of the switch.

The Tampa Tribune reports that manager George Wiehle is working feverishly to restore tv viewing for the inmates, by taking the cheaper route of having converter boxes installed. This cost effective option, is only about $200 compared to getting digital TVs, which would be more expensive.

Neighboring county jails Pinellas, Pasco, Polk, had no problems, as they are connected to cable, which inmates pay for.

I say who cares if non law-abiding citizens are without TV. TV is a privilege, not a right. There are certainly more important issues to worry about. It's bad enough that our taxes pay for prisoner health care, food, housing etc. Thankfully, they are not going about implementing TV service expensively.
